Huge Mushroom Garden: Plan Space and Harvest Safely

Your huge mushroom garden needs suitable planting ground, bone meal, and enough room for the cap. This simple design uses podzol so you can plant in daylight, then harvest manually from scaffolding. It follows standard, unmodified Java and Bedrock 1.21 mechanics.

Materials: For the example floor, use 80 dirt blocks and 1 podzol block; existing dirt can replace supplied dirt. Bring 1 brown mushroom, 1 red mushroom, 32 bone meal as a starting budget, 24 scaffolding, 4 cobblestone corner markers, 1 chest, and an axe. Bone meal and scaffolding quantities are working allowances, not guaranteed requirements.

Step 1: Choose level ground away from buildings and trees. Mark a 9×9 growing floor, with four blocks extending from its center in each horizontal direction.

Step 2: Make the floor dirt and replace its center block with podzol. Clear the entire footprint for 14 blocks above the floor. These are generous planning dimensions, not exact minimum requirements.

Step 3: Put your chest and corner markers outside the growing footprint. Keep the growing volume empty, including overhanging leaves, fences, and temporary access blocks.

Step 4: Plant either the brown or red mushroom on the central podzol. Use only one planting position. Podzol and mycelium ignore the normal mushroom light-placement limit; ordinary surfaces require light below 13.

Step 5: Apply bone meal until growth succeeds or you decide to inspect the setup. Growth is probabilistic, so a failed attempt does not automatically mean the clearing is wrong.

Step 6: After growth, build a stable scaffolding route beside the cap. Harvest reachable cap blocks and the stem manually, descend to collect drops, then remove all overhead leftovers before replanting.

Use ordinary, non-Silk-Touch harvesting when you want small mushrooms. Caps can drop them, but no minimum return is guaranteed. Silk Touch instead lets you collect mushroom blocks.

Keep a spare planting mushroom in your chest and grow one mushroom per cycle. Inspect your access route before climbing, and never remove scaffolding while you are standing on the section it supports.
