Ocean Monument Breach Tactics

Introduction

Plan the Breach Around Mining Fatigue

An ocean monument assault has three priorities: maintain breathing, defeat its three elder guardians, and establish a protected staging room. Ordinary guardians attack with charging beams; elder guardians also periodically inflict Mining Fatigue III on nearby players. This makes breaking blocks extremely slow, so your first route should use existing entrances and passages rather than depend on mining through walls.

These tactics suit modern vanilla Java and Bedrock survival, but underwater air pockets differ between editions. Server plugins can also change effects, spawning, or block placement. Confirm your emergency breathing method before approaching the monument.

Equipment and Supplies

Combat, Breathing, and Navigation

Bring strong armor, a sword or trident, food, a pickaxe, a boat, and several stacks of solid building blocks. Respiration on a helmet extends underwater breathing; Depth Strider improves underwater movement. Aqua Affinity reduces the normal underwater mining penalty but does not cancel Mining Fatigue. A Loyalty trident provides reusable ranged attacks; ordinary arrows are poor underwater weapons.

Water Breathing potions are the most dependable portable breathing solution across editions. Extended potions last eight minutes; carry a spare beyond your planned trip. Night Vision makes rooms and guardians easier to identify. Bring milk only with a clear plan: drinking it removes Mining Fatigue but also removes beneficial potion effects, including Water Breathing and Night Vision.

Carry a stack of distinctive markers, such as cobblestone, to distinguish your return route from prismarine walls. Wooden doors are useful emergency air pockets in Java, but do not treat them as a cross-edition solution. Doors and signs are not dependable underwater breathing pockets in Bedrock. Check your exact version in shallow water, or use potions throughout.

Optional Conduit Materials

A conduit requires one Heart of the Sea and eight nautilus shells. Its activation frame uses prismarine, prismarine bricks, dark prismarine, or sea lanterns. The minimum working frame contains 16 valid blocks arranged around the water-surrounded conduit; a complete 42-block frame extends its effect range to 96 blocks. Do not merely pile prismarine nearby: conduit activation requires the prescribed frame geometry.

A conduit is an upgrade, not a prerequisite. It needs accessible materials and a safe construction site, and its range may not cover your entire route. Conduit Power supplies underwater breathing, visibility, and mining assistance, but does not neutralize Mining Fatigue.

Step-by-Step Breach

Step 1: Establish a recovery base on nearby land, outside the immediate battle area. Set your spawn in a safe bed and leave backup food, equipment, and breathing supplies in a chest. Record the monument and base coordinates. Do not carry every valuable item into your first attempt.

Step 2: Survey the monument from the surface. Locate the broad front entrance beneath the central structure, then identify a direct approach and retreat route. Drink Water Breathing and, if available, Night Vision before diving. Start with a full health bar and enough food to recover after combat.

Step 3: Enter through the existing front opening. Avoid stopping to fight every outside guardian: more can spawn, making that an inefficient objective. When a guardian locks onto you, move behind a wall or place solid blocks to break its line of sight before the beam completes. Shields are not a dependable answer to guardian beams. Guardians with extended spikes also retaliate against melee attackers, so avoid trading unnecessary hits.

Step 4: Mark junctions consistently as you advance. Place markers on the right when entering so they appear on your left when retreating. Keep doorways passable, and do not seal your only exit. In Java, a tested wooden-door pocket can provide a breathing checkpoint; in Bedrock, rely on your active breathing supply until you have genuinely drained an enclosed space.

Step 5: Find and defeat all three elder guardians: one occupies the upper central section and one occupies each wing. Interior passage layouts vary, so follow connected rooms rather than assuming one universal corridor route. Fight from corners, breaking beam contact between attacks. Track confirmed kills instead of assuming an elder has died because it disappeared around a partition.

Step 6: After the third elder dies, clear Mining Fatigue by waiting for its remaining duration to expire or drinking milk somewhere safe. Existing fatigue does not disappear automatically with the last kill. Elders normally reapply it roughly once per minute while you remain within range, so milk is unreliable as a sustained mining solution before all three are dead. Replace breathing effects immediately if milk removed them.

Step 7: Establish a safe room near your marked entrance route. Enclose a small area with solid walls and a roof, then replace its water with temporary solid blocks and remove those blocks once surrounding water cannot flow back inside. Sand or gravel can help fill tall water columns. Check corners and entrances for remaining sources before installing storage, lighting, and a dry doorway.

Troubleshooting and Safe Validation

If Mining Fatigue returns, an elder may remain alive or another monument may be nearby. If you cannot break a block, check both the effect timer and your tool rather than exhausting your breathing reserve. If water refills the room, seal the opening or remaining source before continuing excavation.

Lighting alone does not reliably prevent guardian spawning. For a dependable refuge, remove water from the occupied room and keep surrounding guardians physically separated. A dry room is a staging base, not proof that the monument is cleared.

Before a long expedition, validate your air-pocket method and any conduit layout in a shallow, recoverable location. On modified servers, assume nothing about altered mechanics. If door pockets fail or conduit construction is impractical, a potion-supported entrance route with frequent returns to shore remains the sensible alternative.
