Archaeology and Pottery Sherds: Brushing Suspicious Blocks
Intro (Java & Bedrock, 1.20+)
Intro (Java & Bedrock, 1.20+)
Archaeology lets you uncover items hidden in suspicious blocks using the Brush. In both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition (added in 1.20), brushing suspicious sand or suspicious gravel can reveal loot like pottery sherds, which you can use to craft and decorate decorated pots.
Quick steps
Step 1: Craft a Brush using 1 Feather + 1 Copper Ingot + 1 Stick.
Step 2: Find suspicious blocks. Look for suspicious sand and suspicious gravel at archaeology sites such as desert wells, desert pyramids, and trail ruins.
Step 3: Clear carefully. Suspicious blocks can be fragile; avoid breaking them if you want the archaeology loot. Make space around the block so you can brush safely.
Step 4: Brush the block. Hold the Brush and use it on the suspicious block until an item pops out. One block yields one item, then the block becomes normal sand/gravel.
Step 5: Use pottery sherds. Craft a Decorated Pot from 4 bricks. Put pottery sherds (or plain bricks) into the four crafting slots around the pot recipe to set the pot’s patterns.
Tip: Support suspicious sand/gravel before brushing (for example, don’t leave it floating). If it falls and breaks, you’ll lose the chance to uncover its item.
